Why does my cat drink from the tap?

Despite having a bowl of water available, your cat prefers to drink its water from the tap, forcing you to serve it constantly. But why does it do this? The reason is quite simple: the water is fresher and therefore tastes better. To avoid (or less so) becoming your cat's slave when it comes to drinking, and above all, to limit the risk of dehydration in your absence, here are some solutions.
Chat qui boit au robinet - Why does my cat drink from the tap?

Your cat is next to your sink or bathtub. He stares at you insistently and lets out little plaintive meows. No doubt; His Majesty wants you to turn on the tap so he can drink. And like the good slave that you are, you comply and wait wisely for him to swallow his last mouthful.

Why does my cat only want to drink from the tap?

Our cats often have strange behaviors with their food, such as scratching around their bowl , and their drink. Some drink from their bowl or water bowl, while others prefer to drink from the tap , from our own glass of water or even from the toilet bowl!

If your cat prefers to drink from the tap, the reason is primarily taste; the water is fresh and therefore tastes better . A bit like us: we prefer to drink water straight from the tap, rather than a glass of water filled the day before.

Your mustachioed one may also be wary of his water bowl or dish - stagnant water reminds him of stagnant water, containing bacteria and other toxic substances.

Finally, his attraction to the faucet can also be for play. He is fascinated by the jet of water that flows, having fun with his paw touching the transparent liquid that comes out of a strange pipe.

My cat drinks from the tap, what can I do to stop him?

Very restrictive for you, this behavior is also not without risk for its health. And for good reason: in your absence, your cat cannot drink as much as it wants and may, in the short term, suffer from chronic dehydration which can lead to episodes of constipation or, in the majority of cases, urinary disorders. Let's keep in mind that the less a cat drinks, the more its urine will be concentrated in minerals which are precursors of urinary stones!

Here are some solutions to encourage your cat to drink, other than from the tap.

  • Change the water in your bowl several times a day;

To encourage your cat to drink from its bowl, bowl or dish, change the water several times a day or at least twice a day, morning and evening, if you have to go out during the day. This will give your feline fresh water, perfect for its delicate little taste buds!

  • Choose a glass or porcelain water bowl;

Make sure his bowl is always clean, but also plastic-free because this material tends to absorb bad odors. Water can also be impregnated with the smell of plastic, especially when it is new. And kitty does not appreciate that at all!

  • Invest in a water fountain;

The water fountain is ideal for our cats, especially for those who like moving water. Your mustachioed one will feel like he is drinking from a tap. However, remember to clean the fountain every week and change the filter every month.

Favor wet food!

To hydrate your cat as much as possible and limit the risk of dehydration, the best thing to do is to offer him - in addition to a bowl of water - wet food.

Our cats are by nature small drinkers . Just like their ancestors from the desert, they hydrate themselves mainly through their diet. It is by consuming their prey (field mice, mice) that they ingest all the water contained in their tissues. Today domesticated, they have kept this habit of “eating” water.

Wet food, namely pâté , is ideal here to cover the water needs of our felines. For comparison, pâté contains on average 75% water, compared to 10% for kibble.

By offering your cat wet food, he will drink water without realizing it and may also ask you, a little less, to turn on the tap. With an exclusively wet diet, our cats tend not to drink much water next to it.

For your mustachioed one - whether he drinks from the tap, a glass or a bowl of water, pâté is highly recommended. But be careful about the quality of the latter; not all wet foods are equal.

It must be rich in quality proteins, low in carbohydrates, low in fat, but also low in phosphorus to preserve its fragile little kidneys. Find all our advice for choosing the best pâté for your cat.
