choose a specific diet for kittens?
To grow properly, our kittens need a diet tailored to their age. Their bodies are gradually maturing, synthesizing new tissues, and trying to grow harmoniously. Unlike adult cats, they are still developing, so their nutritional needs are different from those of their older siblings. Without an age-appropriate diet, kittens may develop health problems.
Kibble or wet food – what should you choose for your kitten?
It is perfectly fine to offer your kitten a mixed diet, with a small portion of kibble in addition to their wet food. Kibble for kittens helps them get used to a new texture, as it is hard and crunchy. Wet food for kittens, on the other hand, has the advantage of being very rich in water. With the same composition, it allows kittens to consume twice as much water as with kibble alone—even if they drink water on the side. A cat fed mainly with wet food is also less likely to develop overweight, obesity, or diabetes. When well-formulated, wet food also helps reduce the risk of urinary issues.
And in the case of Ziggy’s small wet food portions, they are starch-free! While kittens digest proteins and fats very well, their digestive system is not yet developed enough to efficiently process a large amount of starch.
While they are growing, kittens have specific nutritional needs. To support healthy development, their diet should primarily be:
- Rich in high-quality protein: Proteins are essential because they provide energy and, more importantly, essential amino acids that are crucial for growth and development. Without sufficient protein, kittens may suffer from deficiencies and develop serious health issues, such as neurological disorders or impaired immune function.
- Balanced in fat: Growing kittens have higher energy needs and therefore require a diet rich in fats to provide the necessary calories in a small quantity of food. Kittens have small stomachs and limited digestive capacity, so their daily portions must contain all essential nutrients and sufficient energy. Fats provide calories and are also carriers of vital vitamins (A, D3, E). Additionally, fats supply essential fatty acids, like omega-6 and omega-3, which are crucial for skin health, a shiny coat, proper blood flow, immunity, growth, and nervous system development.
- Balanced in minerals: Unlike adult cats, kittens require slightly higher amounts of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals that are essential for proper bone growth.
