Choosing the ideal litter for your cat is essential for his well-being and health.
Different types of cat litter
There are three main categories of cat litter:
- Mineral litter: Made of clay pellets, known for their absorbent power. However, they can produce a lot of dust and are not biodegradable.
- Silica litter: Made of absorbent crystals that retain odours and moisture. However, they are synthetic and expensive.
- Plant-based litter: Made from natural materials like wood or corn, they are biodegradable, compostable, and produce minimal dust. they’re an eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable option.
How to choose the right cat litter?
Several criteria should be considered for the health and comfort of your furry friend:
- Absorption and odors: Good litter must effectively absorb urine and neutralise bad odors, especially your cat's stool, to ensure both your and your cat's comfort!
- Low dust emission: Low-dust litters are preferable, especially if your cat or you are sensitive to airborne particles.
- Paw comfort: Choose a soft texture that won't irritate your cat's paws. Some cats may not like stepping on pellets that are too hard for their sensitive paw pads.
- Environmental impact: Biodegradable and compostable litters are more environmentally friendly.

For your cat's health - and to avoid vengeful peeing outside the litter box - it's essential to keep the litter always clean by removing soiled pellets and stools daily, and completely cleaning the litter box once a week for optimal hygiene. Be careful not to use white vinegar, as cats don't like the smell and might do their business elsewhere. Opt for soapy water.
