should I choose for my large cat?

Maine Coons, Ragdolls or Norwegians are large cats with very specific characteristics that have won over many pet owners. Maine Coons are some of the largest domestic cats in the world. They can weigh anything between 6 and 12 kilos. Now that's a big cat!

Because of their size, big cats need the right diet to stay healthy. With their larger, more powerful jaws, Maine Coons and other large cats need dry food suited to their large jaws to help them chew properly!

Our large cats also need a protein-rich diet. If they don't eat enough protein, they could end up catabolizing their own muscle mass and losing weight. As Maine Coons are long-haired cats, protein is also essential for them to keep a healthy coat.

Ziggy dry food for Maine Coons, with 44% protein, is perfectly suited to meet the nutritional needs of these majestic felines.

Ziggy kibble is formulated by Dr Géraldine Blanchard: rich in protein, low in carbohydrates and phosphorus, 100% transparent composition.

Ziggy cat food is unique! All our products are formulated by Dr Géraldine Blanchard, a veterinary specialised in feline nutrition for 25 years. They contain only premium proteins, very few carbs and very little phosphorus to keep your cat happy and purring! And of course, all the ingredients are listed on the back of the packaging, for total transparency.

The Maine Coon grows until 2 to 3 years old: maintain a kitten diet until the end of its growth, then switch to the adult range. Ziggy offers a special Maine Coon kibble size (1 x 1 cm), adapted to its wide jaw.

Because Maine Coons are large cats, they take much longer to develop than other breeds, sometimes up to 3 years.

Until the end of their development, kitten food is preferred to provide little Maine Coons with all the nutrients and calories they need to grow: proteins and fats, phosphorus and calcium in sufficient quantities. 😺

After neutering, all you need to do is readjust the daily portions so that they don't put on weight.

To help you, you can use our Daily Portion Calculator and adjust the portion every month according to their changing nutritional needs.

Once your cat is fully grown, you can switch to the adult range. We also offer a special Maine Coon dry food format (1 cm x 1 cm), better suited to their large, powerful jaws.

Ziggy offers ranges adapted to every profile: kitten (0-12 months), sterilised or entire adult cats, and cats with pathologies (diabetes, kidney disease, urinary disorders). The difference between sterilised and entire cats only concerns caloric intake, not nutrients.

Our dry and wet food are not exclusively intended for neutered adult cats. We have different ranges of products:

💛 For Kittens (up to 12 months):

You'll find wet food and dry food for kittens. These are developed to fully nourish a neutered kitten, but quantities must be adjusted.

😻 For Adult Cats:

You'll find a whole range of wet food for adult cats recipes, as well as dry food for adult cats, for both neutered and intact adult cats.

The wet food for intact adult cats is slightly more caloric than those for neutered adult cats, which is why we specifically design our products this way.

The nutritional needs of adult cats, whether neutered or intact, remain the same. It's only the caloric requirement that drops by 20% after neutering. The idea's simply to adjust the daily portion according to your cat's caloric needs. For this, you can use our Daily Portion Calculator.

💙 For Cats with conditions: We've developed a Vet range to support diabetic cats, cats with renal impairment, or cats suffering from urinary problems. We're working on future products to assist cats with other conditions in their daily lives.

Our recipes have been formulated by Dr Géraldine Blanchard, a veterinary specialising in feline nutrition. Our high-quality wet food is formulated around the most advanced knowledge in feline nutrition.

Changing flavour or range within Ziggy requires no transition: all recipes share similar compositions, with no risk of digestive upset.

We recommend planning a dietary transition when significantly changing your cat's diet.

At Ziggy, all our cat dry and wet food recipes are very high quality, and the compositions are very similar. So there's no need to make the transition from one Ziggy flavour to another, as there's no risk of digestive problems.

Whether you're switching from the kitten to the adult range, or simply want to vary the flavours, you won't need to make another transition! 😺

The transition to Ziggy food is done gradually: increase the kibble by 10% per day over 10 days, then introduce wet food starting from half a teaspoon, mixing it with a fork into the previous wet food.

Cats like to cling to their habits; they don't always like change! For a successful dietary transition, both in terms of digestion and behavior, we recommend incorporating Ziggy's wet food gradually into their diet. If you need personalized nutritional support, you can download our E-book on how to manage a gentle dietary transition.

Here's what we recommend for a successful dry food transition:

Mix a little Ziggy into their usual dry food and serve as normal.

- Day 1: 10% ZIGGY - 90% Usual dry food

- Day 2: 20% ZIGGY - 80% Usual dry food

- Day 3: 30% ZIGGY - 70% Usual dry food& so on!

Once you've reached 100% ZIGGY dry food, wait a few days before starting the wet food transition!

Here's our suggestion for the wet food transition:

- Day 1: Half a teaspoon of ZIGGY's mixed with their usual wet food.

It's really important to mix both thoroughly with a fork to achieve a homogeneous consistency.

- Day 2: One teaspoon of ZIGGY's mixed with their usual wet food.

& So on... you get the idea, the transition should be very gradual 🐢

Your cat's never had wet food? Anything is possible with a little patience!

Start with a teaspoon of Ziggy wet food each day added to a small dry food meal.

Repeat that each day until the wet food gets eaten. Then, gradually increase the amount day by day (while decreasing the amount of dry food available, you don't want your cat to end up on a double portion!).

If you have any questions, feel free to write to us: hello@ziggyfamily.com, our team will be happy to help you!

A gradual transition allows the vast majority of cats to easily adopt the Ziggy diet. In case of difficulty, the team offers personalised nutritional support.

Don't worry, as long as you stick to a very gradual transition, the (vast) majority of cats love their Ziggy dry food and wet food!

However, if your cat's fussy and has trouble changing his diet, feel free to take a look at our transition guide or write an email to our team: hello@ziggyfamily.com, we'll offer personalized nutritional support and find a solution that works for your cat.

Enter your cat's ideal weight into our portion calculator and we'll calculate the right amount of wet food and/or dry food to give him.

All Ziggy kibble, for sterilised adult cats and kittens, is grain-free. Poorly digestible for cats, grains do not correspond to their natural needs as strict carnivores.

Yes, our dry food for adult neutered cats and our dry food for kittens are grain-free. Cats do not naturally eat wheat or barley. Cereals or grains are difficult for them to digest, so they turn to foods that are good for them. However, they will eat a little grain when they eat a field mouse or a small mouse, because their preys eat grain. But the quantities are really tiny.

The manufacture of kibble necessarily requires starch as a binding agent. We use potato, with a low glycaemic index and gently cooked to limit carbohydrate intake, rather than tapioca or lentils.

To make dry food, you need to use starch, a carbohydrate ‘stored by plants in the form of granules which, when ground, provide a starch’. This is a kind of glue that enables dry food to hold together and have an airy, crunchy texture. To date, no manufacturer has yet found a solution to eliminate starch.

To replace grain, other sources of starch such as potatoes can be used. At Ziggy, we prefer potatoes to tapioca or lentils. This ingredient allows us to obtain a low GI (Glycaemic Index). This depends very much on the cooking method, so we prefer gentle cooking to limit the carb intake.

All Ziggy recipes are formulated by Dr Veterinarian Géraldine Blanchard, specialist in feline nutrition, analysed by an independent laboratory and manufactured in France (Normandy, Hauts-de-France, Seine-Maritime, Centre-Val de Loire).
