Cat Vomits Often: Why and What to Do?

Vomiting in cats may be common, but it should still be taken seriously. However, if your little cat throws up a hairball every now and then, it's not a big deal!

Vomissements chez le chat : est-ce normal ?

Vomiting is defined as the expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth, and under the action of contraction of the abdominal muscles and the diaphragm.

They should not be confused with regurgitations . They correspond to the expulsion of the contents of the esophagus, just after the ingestion of food.

Les principales causes des vomissements chez le chat

My cat regularly vomits hairballs

When your cat grooms itself, it swallows a lot of hair, especially if it has long hair. These are stored in its stomach and form clumps called " trichobezoars" .

If your cat regularly vomits hairballs, we recommend adding a small amount of vegetables to its diet, such as a little boiled zucchini or green beans . At Ziggy, all our pâtés contain a little zucchini.

These are foods rich in fiber and water , which facilitate the passage of hair through the digestive tract. They are excellent for the health of our little companions, and they generally love them! We advise you to read our article on the benefits of zucchini for our cats to learn more about the subject.

Also remember to brush your cat regularly to remove dead hair and prevent it from ingesting it.

At Ziggy, we have created THE brush we dreamed of for our felines. A double-headed cat brush : one side with balled steel pins to gently detangle and massage, and one side with nylon pins to soften and shine. Suitable for both short and long hair, it is made of ash wood from sustainably managed forests, vegan and made in France in the Oise. French to the tips of the hairs!

However, you should not take your cat's regurgitation lightly. Regurgitation may be due to hair, which irritates the digestive tract, but also to other more serious factors. If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult your veterinarian, who will examine your cat.

My cat is vomiting because he eats too fast

Our cats are used to eating throughout the day and night, and in the form of several small meals.

Some cats can feel frustrated and be particularly gluttonous. They do not hesitate to gobble up their meal very quickly , leading to vomiting later. To avoid this, we advise you to split your beloved cat's meals. For example, you can give him a little pâté in the morning when he wakes up, then before leaving for work, when he comes home in the evening, and just before going to bed.

While you are away, do not hesitate to provide some kibble in a dispenser toy , which will slow down food intake and stimulate your cat physically and mentally.

Note that if your cat eats too fast, it may also be due to its diet. It may not be suitable for your cat: poor quality proteins, too much fat, etc. We explain everything in our article: My cat eats too fast: why and what to do?

Some examples of causes of vomiting in our cats

If your cat is vomiting, there could be several causes:

Your veterinarian will be able to carry out in-depth examinations (blood test, imaging examination, endoscopy, stool and urine analysis, etc.) in order to determine the cause of this acute vomiting and, if necessary, administer appropriate treatment to your cat.

Deficiencies can also be responsible for vomiting in our little companions: a single meal deficient in arginine , an essential amino acid, can trigger a hyperacute ammonia poisoning in a cat, manifesting as severe encephalopathy with vomiting. Fortunately, arginine is abundant in animal tissues, and this deficiency remains very rare in our cats, when they are fed with an appropriate food .

Finally, poor quality food can also be difficult to digest, irritating and therefore facilitate vomiting. It is for this same reason that we advise you to choose a healthy diet with quality proteins for your little cat.

My cat is vomiting unusually

On the other hand, if your cat vomits in a habitual manner: either its meal, bile or a foamy substance... It will be necessary to consult your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Try to observe him to determine if his general condition has deteriorated over the last few days: does he seem more tired? Has he lost or gained weight? Does he neglect his food bowl? Vomiting may be accompanied by other symptoms: for example, fever, weight loss, dejection, diarrhea, balance problems, etc.

Vomiting is a common symptom in many "digestive" or "extra-digestive" diseases.

At Ziggy, all our cat foods have excellent digestibility. No more belly problems, perfect digestion for our kitties!
