Which bowl should I choose for my cat? Our advice

How to choose a bowl for my cat? While it may seem like a small detail, choosing the right bowl is important to ensure your furry friend's optimal comfort. As we often say, cats are sensitive and delicate beings, so picking the perfect bowl is essential.

Where should I place my cat’s bowl?

A few basic rules:

  • Make sure your kitty’s bowl is always clean. They will appreciate fresh water, so replace it frequently and avoid stagnant water to prevent any risk of illness.
  • Use several bowls: one for dry food, one for wet food if you opt for mixed feeding, and another one for water.
  • Your cat must have easy access to their food and water. Place the bowl in a quiet, safe spot where your cat feels secure while eating.
  • Avoid placing the bowl near the litter box or in high-traffic areas.
  • Feed your cat at regular times if possible. Otherwise, your furry royal highness will let you know you’re late.
  • If you have more than one cat, each one should have their own bowl.

Choosing the right material for your cat’s bowl

There’s a wide range of bowls on the market. Four criteria should guide your choice: first, ease of cleaning.

Next, consider the bowl size: avoid high edges, as some cats dislike when their whiskers touch the sides or when their vision is blocked.

It’s also important that the bowl doesn’t slip and has no strong or unpleasant smell. Your cat might stop eating or refuse their new food if the smell bothers them.

Common materials include stainless steel, silicone, ceramic, and plastic/melamine.

Stainless steel bowls

These often have a non-slip silicone base, are durable, dishwasher safe, and easy to clean.

Plastic bowls

They are lightweight and easy to clean, but tend to wear out quickly and may retain odours over time.

Ceramic bowls

Hygienic and easy to clean. At Ziggy, we’ve launched a ceramic cat bowl, available in 3 colours and designed for optimal comfort while eating.

Silicone bowls

Less common, silicone bowls are handy when traveling. Choose BPA-free options for safety.

Different types of cat bowls

Slow feeders

Slow feeder bowls help distribute food evenly, encourage slower eating, reduce boredom, and limit weight gain. If your cat eats too quickly, these are ideal — even for kittens learning to self-regulate.

For speedy eaters, Ziggy also offers licking mats made from silicone. They slow down meals while stimulating your cat’s natural licking instinct — supporting digestion, oral hygiene, and offering fun!

Automatic feeders and water fountains

These can be helpful if you’re away. Some dispensers can be programmed to release food at fixed times. Be aware, though: free feeding doesn’t suit all cats.
